Which vaccinations will I need to protect me in the country I am visiting ?

When planning a trip to a new country, one of the most important things to consider is which vaccinations you will need. Different regions of the world have different diseases and health risks, so it's crucial to protect yourself by getting the necessary shots. Some common vaccinations to ask about include those for yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and malaria. It's also important to inquire about any required vaccinations for entry into the country, such as for COVID-19. Don't forget to schedule your vaccinations at least 4-6 weeks before your trip to ensure full protection. Your health and safety should always be a top priority while traveling.

Antimalarial Tablets

Antimalarial tablets are an important tool in preventing and treating malaria, a deadly and widespread disease. These tablets contain powerful medications that kill the malaria parasites in the blood.

Cholera

Cholera is a bacterial infection that can cause severe diarrhoea. It isn’t found in the UK, but there’s a very small risk of catching it if you’re travelling in some parts of the world.

Diphtheria, tetanus and polio (DTP)

DTP stands for Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio, which is a combined vaccine that protects against these three serious, potentially life-threatening diseases.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by a virus. It’s usually spread in the poo of someone who’s infected. Hepatitis A isn’t common in the UK but it’s common in other parts of the world.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a virus that spreads through blood and body fluids. It causes an infection of the liver.

Japanese encephalitis

Japanese encephalitis is a rare but serious viral infection. It’s spread through mosquito bites. The virus starts with a mosquito biting an infected pig or bird, then biting a human and transmitting the disease. It can’t be passed from person to person.

Meningitis ACWY

Meningococcal disease is caused by bacteria and can result in meningitis, an infection of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord (meninges). The bacteria of meningococcal disease is divided into five main groups (A, B, C, W and Y).

MMR Vaccine

The MMR vaccination helps protect you against three serious illnesses – measles, mumps and rubella. It’s an effective vaccination with a good safety profile that’s given to babies and young children as part of the NHS Childhood Vaccination Programme.

Rabies

Rabies is a rare but serious disease which is transmitted to humans usually by a bite or scratch from an infected animal. It can be fatal once symptoms appear, but being vaccinated and having treatment early can prevent it.

Tick-borne encephalitis

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection that’s spread by a type of tick, which looks a bit like a small spider. TBE is transmitted when an infected tick bites a human or animal.

Typhoid

Typhoid fever is a highly contagious bacterial infection that can affect the whole body. It can be potentially fatal. Typhoid fever is most common in parts of the world with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water.
